最近准备文理学院的专场，加之有几个学生在文理学院就读，有些反馈，就做了一个关于文理学院的主题讲座，趁热拿出来写。

今天集中分析四个方面：
1. 什么是文理学院？文理学院有什么共同的特点？
2. 美中国际文理学院的经典案例（2014-2015）什么样的学生进入文理学院？
3. 哪些文理学院很特别？
4. 你适合文理学院吗？

什么是文理学院？文理学院有什么共同的特点？
文理学院的英文原文是LiberalArts College.需要指出的是，这里的arts不能简单的理解成艺术，而应该是素质、能力和思想这样的软性的能力。Liberal Arts College是相对于具体的职业教育而言的，其目标不在于教会学生某些具体的谋生的技能，而是从多方面对学生进行教育，使其成为一个高素质，有教养的文化人。因此，Liberal artscollege肯定会有教授古希腊的哲学思想史（Classics），而大多数不会教授会计学。由于最初去文理学院就读的都是贵族后裔，他们也不需要担心就业压力。他们所关注的是如何提升自己的素质，提高自己的修养。因此，这里的liberal或多或少带有某种贵族特权的色彩。试想，穷人的孩子考虑的首先是如何谋得一份差事以糊口，他们对会计学的兴趣肯定要大于对古希腊的哲学思想史。

我非常认同这句话“Liberal Artseducation is education for life”

我认为文理学院具备如下特点：
（1）贵族的，小型的，安静的
文理学院只占美国大学院校的3%，前身全部是贵族学院。几乎都是1000-2000左右的规模，小型，甚至有900个学生的，比如加州克莱蒙特联盟的Scripps College 女子学院。文理学院都坐落在小镇或者乡村，安全性都极好。只有像Barnard 这样的女子文理学院，才纽约哥大的旁边。
（2）教授专心于教学，而非研究。跟学生的interaction非常多
文理学院的教授，是真正学生的老师，亲自给学生授课，而且研究生，助教。他们的精力不在于出研究成果，不在于做课题研究。最为重要的是激发学生。文理学院的课堂一般是几个人到30个人之间不等。经常是Seminar的形式。由于小型，团队的活动和学生的发言特别多。没有空给学生走神也没有空间也学生不参与不发言。所以，及时本来不是特别积极主动的学生，也被迫积极主动，没有得偷懒和被动。还有一些文理学院，每个教授每周都要跟学生沟通或者指导学生做项目的。
（3）通识教育，涵盖人文，自然科学，社会科学，艺术课程
通识教育本身源于19世纪，当时有不少欧美学者有感于现代大学的学术分科太过专门、知识被严重割裂，于是创造出通识教育，目的是培养学生能独立思考、且对不同的学科有所认识，以至能将不同的知识融会贯通，最终目的是培养出完全、完整的人。
（4）文理学院通常都因为其独特的校园文化，有院校的联盟资源，同时，通过院校联盟弥补文理学院的不足，从而达到大U 的院校资源
马萨诸塞州五校联盟（Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith,University ofMassachusetts at Amherst）
宾州三校联盟（Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr）
克莱蒙特学校联盟（Pomona, Scripps, Claremont McKenna, HarveyMudd, Pitzer）俄亥俄五校联盟（Oberlin College, Kenyon College, OhioWesleyan University,Denison University,College of Wooster）
缅因州的三校联盟（Colby, Bates, Bowdoin)
（5） 文理学院的费用高，但好多文理学院奖学金丰富
文理学院的费用，一年几乎都在4.8万美金-7万美金之间。Amherst的奖学金就是Need-blinded，超级大方，奖学金随便发，只要你足够优秀，像Wellesley，Wesleyan，Smith，Mount Holyoke，BMC，都有非常丰富的奖学金。
（6）校友关系密切
文理学院的小型授课决定了文理学院的校友关系。想象一下，一起上课，一起讨论，一起做Project，大家之间相互认识就很深，有感情，一旦感情密切，以后毕业之后的感情就依然很好。再说了，几乎所有的文理学院，都有很好玩的欢迎新生和指导新生的活动，像BMC的Lantern Night，Hell week，Night Dance都是促进学姐和学妹之间关系的很亲密的活动。一起玩过一起疯过的，按我们中国的说法，就叫死党了。

你适合文理学院吗？

在我的观察和理解中，我认为以下的学生适合就读文理学院：
理想主义者（文理学院的学生，都是有一定追求和理想的学生，不是满足于个人的私欲的。传承和培养的是贵族气质，所以，大部分学生，有更高远的追求，对成功的定义也非世俗的定义。）
情怀
追求
非急功近利（文理学院的就业，在本科毕业后并不是特别明显，因为地理位置，加上学生专业的设置，另外，学生的需求并不在于马上就业，所以，学生要申请文理学院的时候，一定要好好的审视自己，是否对于就业不着急）

跳出Comfort Zone
挑战新领域
贵族气质
（文理学院，所有的学生，都要跳出自己的comfort zone, 挑战自己不熟悉和不擅长的领域）

人文关怀
社会责任
热爱生活
艺术品位

以下是我们的一位学生，给我们反馈的邮件中，我摘抄出来的关于她在Smith的感受

• Every student here is definitelyacademic-oriented, talented in differentways, liberal, progressive and feministic. Everyone can find their nichehere and be appreciated for who she really is, without feeling the need toconform to any certain standards.
• Smith strives to provide students withabundant opportunities to explore their interests and jump out of their comfortzones with the help of a professional. There are seminars, presentations andworkshops on new discoveries, launching programs and courses and careerguidance every day.

最后，我想以college confidential 的一个比喻来结束文理学院和大U ，究竟哪个更适合你。
A good LAC is like a formal sit-down restaurant. Helpful waiters lead you to abooth, bring you the menu and explain the options available. There are severalchoices for each course, and each one will be nicely prepared and broughtdirectly to your table. It‘s very safe and cosy, and you’re unlikely to besurprised or disappointed by anything you order. But if you want somethingthat‘s not on that menu -- or if you don’t like the people you‘re seated with-- you’re just out of luck.

A good university is like the midnight buffet on a cruise ship. There areliterally thousands of choices, from sushi to enchiladas to chocolate trufflesand if you want something you don't see on the buffet, you can ask them to whipsome up for you. You can sit wherever you like, with whomever you like, andchange seats several times if you want. You can return to the buffet to trydifferent things multiple times. However, it's your job to pick the food youwant and your responsibility to bring it to your table. There are helpful staffmembers available to give you a hand if you need one, but you have to get upand find them and ask them questions. If you just sit at your table and wait,you're going to starve.

这个比喻其实也只是在大方向上区分了文理学院和大U 的区别。
我更愿意，选校的过程，我们根据和小孩面谈，根据小孩的特点，我们多来听听小孩自己的想法。同时对于自主选择文理学院的家长，也要给他们普及，让他们认识到，自己有时了解的并不一定全面，也不一定适合自己的小孩。

依我的经验，在美国读书3-5年以上高中，更适合文理学院。小孩和家长，因人而异，我们做为顾问的，要凭借自己的经验，给他们一些参考，让学生和家长来做决定。

我以前接触过一个小孩，上了Mount Holyoke，发现自己不太喜欢那种氛围，最后转学了USC，整个人都好了，阳光明媚。
