AmCham Shanghai hosted APCO Director Bruce Fu to discuss the importance of technology and the Internet within China’s 13th Five Year Plan (FYP) on May 17 at the Portman Ritz Carlton.

Fu, an expert on Internet and communications technology issues in China, spoke to members about the technology aspects of the 13th FYP, including Internet Plus, cloud computing, cyber security and big data. Fu provided a basic introduction of the plan, noting that President Xi is pushing for a “New Normal” of economic development, with structural reforms aimed at securing sustainable and high-quality growth in the coming decades.

The 13th FYP makes a strong call for innovation-driven development. Fu spoke about how the development of a new generation of IT is a priority under the FYP and how it encourages investment in high tech and energy efficient technology. He also spoke about China’s commitment to improve network infrastructure, including optical fiber broadband, 4G and 5G mobile networks.

His presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session that addressed a number of issues including the impact the FYP could have on Internet startups and SMEs.

The event was part of AmCham’s on-going 13th Five Year Plan Speaker Series.  To find out more about upcoming events, click “Read More” below.
