Mrs. Young is a passionate educator and leader who joined Duke TIP in July 2016 after serving as the executive director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)’s Office of Engineering Outreach Programs (OEOP) for eight years. 

She received a BS in Chemistry from Howard University and an MAT in Science Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also completed a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from Boston University and holds an MBA from MIT Sloan. In addition, she serves on advisory boards for the William and Ida Friday Institute for Education Innovation and the National Girls Collaborative.


Mrs. Young 曾担任马省理工学院(MIT)工程外联项目(OEOP)执行主席,任职八年,并于2016年7月加入Duke TIP项目。

Dr. Gao was the chair of the department of physics at Duke University from 2011 to 2014, and former President of the International Organization of the Chinese Physicists and Astronomers.

She was born in Shanghai, and spent a few years of her childhood in the city of Kunshan. She received her B.S. degree from Tsinghua University in 1988 and Ph.D. in physics from Caltech in 1994. She was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign from 1994 to 1996 and then joined the staff at the Argonne National Laboratory in 1996. She became an assistant professor of physics at MIT in 1997 and was promoted to associate professor in 2002. She joined the physics faculty at Duke University in 2002 and became a full professor in 2008. She was named the Henry Newson Professor of Physics in 2012 at Duke. From 2006 to 2009, she was the associate chair for teaching in physics at Duke and became the chair of the department in 2011.

Thomas B. Gold, PhD

Dr. Gold has served as Associate Dean of International and Area Studies, as well as the Executive Director of the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies, a consortium of North American universities that operates an intermediate to advanced Chinese language program at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He has published on many topics on China, including youth, guanxi, popular culture, private business, microfinance, cross-Strait relations, and Taiwan society. He serves or has served on the Boards of the Asia Society of Northern California, National Committee on US-China Relations, Teach for China, 1990 Institute, Oberlin Shansi Memorial Association, Pacific Environment, Berkeley Hillel, chinadialogue, and The American Alliance for International Education. He was in the first group of American government-sponsored students to study in China, spending a year at Fudan University in Shanghai, 1979-1980.

Jeffrey L. Moe, PhD

Before joining the Duke Global Health Institute in 2015, Professor Moe was an executive in residence in the Health Sector Management program, the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University beginning in 2002.  Jeff has taught graduate level courses using the “case method”.  In case teaching, students are presented with a problem situation.  Students place themselves in the role of the decision maker, consider alternatives and recommend various courses of action.  Professor Moe has also taught using various experiential and “constructivist” learning modalities. In constructivist teaching, the student draws from many disciplines (math, language arts, visual arts, etc.) in seeking solutions to a problem of interest to the student.  Most recently Professor Moe has taught undergraduate and graduate students in “Global Health Ethics”, “Health Systems in Developing Countries” and “Program Management and Research Administration in Global Health” at Duke University and at Duke Kunshan University.  Moe received his M.Ed. in Adult Education and his Ph.D. in Organization Development and Institutional Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Moe was an executive at GlaxoSmithKline before joining the faculty at Duke in 2002.


Jeffrey L. Dr. Makel holds a Masters in Developmental Psychology from Cornell University, and a PhD in Educational Psychology from Indiana University. His research focuses on research methods and the nature and development of academically talented youth. He serves as the editor of Duke TIP’s Research Digest and is currently the chair- of the Research & Evaluation Network of the National Association for Gifted Children. He is the winner of multiple MENSA Education & Research Foundation awards for Excellence in Research. He is the co-editor of the new book, Toward a More Perfect Psychology: Improving Trust, Accuracy, and Transparency in Research, published by the American Psychological Foundation.

Sarah Fisher, PhD

Dr. Fisher has spent much of the past five summers as an instructor for Duke TIP in India and China.  She holds a BA in History and Political Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville.  She earned her PhD in Political Science and International Affairs from the University of Georgia.  Her research focuses on foreign policy attitudes and social studies pedagogy.  She is especially interested in utilizing methods and techniques from K-12 education in the college classroom.  Fisher has published in journals such as International Interactions, The Social Studies, and Dialogue: the Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy.

Brian Cooper

Mr. Cooper holds a B.A. in English and an M.A.T. in Secondary English Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He taught AP English Literature and Composition in Durham Public Schools for six years, and he was named Durham Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year in 2001.  In 1997 Mr. Cooper began his work with Duke TIP, and he has served in a variety of roles, creating new distance-learning and face-to-face program models, managing face-to-face and online educational programming, and supporting the launch of TIP programming in China. He is passionate about developing and delivering innovative educational experiences that engage talented students and enable them to forge meaningful connections with their peers and with a dedicated teacher as they wrestle with big ideas and real-world problems.

Matthew believes that passionate young scholars, if properly mentored, can reach remarkable heights through their intellect, imagination, and determination. He is Founder and Program Director of Pioneer Academics, a Delaware public benefit corporation that connects selected high school students from 23 countries in a virtual space to undergo deep learning and conduct research under the mentorship of US college faculty. His leadership in providing deep learning opportunities to students across geographic and socio-economic boundaries led to his receiving a Life Achievement Award from the Institute of Peace and Development in February 2016. Mr. Jaskol earned his MBA from the Yale School of Management in 2008.

Amy Li

Amy Li is a Founding Director of Pioneer Academics, the only program that offers both STEM, social sciences and humanities research opportunities online to outstanding high school students around the globe. She leads reputation management and outreach and supports strategic planning. Her previous roles in education involved developing working with cross-cultural education specialists to develop curriculum and programs for students crossing cultural boundaries. Amy switched her career track from communication management to education in 2010 after she served at Yale University’s Public Affairs Office as a branding officer. Prior to her roles in education, Amy was a seasoned corporate communications expert and a communications trainer. She specialized in crisis management training for executives in major multinational companies including Shell, Mercedes Benz, GE, and The British Council. Amy holds master’s degree in Strategic Public Relations from the journalism track of The Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California.

Patricia (Patty) Kustron

Based at Duke University, Patty is responsible for recruiting highly qualified and talented students from the United States and Canada to participate in the new undergraduate 4-year program at DKU that begins in fall 2018.  Prior to this role, Patty also worked as the Director of Recruitment for the Organization for Tropical Studies based at Duke. Before coming to Duke, Patty served in a variety of roles over a 20-year period at Santa Clara University including Assistant Dean of Students in the area of Student Affairs.  Having earned her Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Patty’s passion has always been working with young adults to support and challenge them to become the best they can be.

Jennifer Bailey

Based at Duke University, she provides a range of outreach, recruitment, and marketing services focused in North America for the Duke Kunshan University undergraduate program. Previously, Jennifer worked in a similar capacity with the graduate program and the undergraduate study abroad program. Prior to recruitment, she was a Program Manager in the Office of Duke Kunshan University Program and acted as a liaison with colleagues from Duke, Duke Kunshan University, Wuhan University and the city of Kunshan to ensure effective and efficient operations for the first phase of the Duke Kunshan initiative. She managed a variety of projects related to academic and operational planning together with students, faculty, and administrators. Prior to joining Duke in April 2011, she worked in global information management at Nike, Inc. where she gained project management and process improvement expertise. Jennifer has a Bachelor of Business degree from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, where she spent her sophomore year studying in Rome, Italy and traveling throughout Europe. She now enjoys travelling throughout the United States, Canada, and China for her job.

Ken Li is responsible for recruiting highly qualified and talented students from China, Asia and Africa to participate in the undergraduate program at Duke Kunshan that will begin in fall 2018. Ken started at Duke Kunshan University in 2014, when he recruited the inaugural cohort of Global Learning Semester students from top universities in China. He continued to recruit an additional five student cohorts. Ken also served a joint venture program in Soochow University by recruiting international undergraduate degree students in 2004-2006. In between Soochow and Duke Kunshan University, Ken served in a variety of roles in government agencies, joint venture enterprises and NGOs. He is a firm believer of education and internationalization.


李瑞主要负责为昆山杜克大学2018年秋季即将开设的四年制本科项目在中国、亚洲和非洲地区招收高素质、有才华的学生。他2014年开始在昆山杜克大学招收首批第二校园项目的学生,截止2017年已成功运行六期。2004年至2006年,曾任职于苏州大学中外办学项目招收本科国际生。这之后的几年里,他在各种政府机构、合资企业和非政府组织中工作,他坚信教育和国际化的力量。

Duke Kunshan University is a Sino-American partnership of Duke University, Wuhan University, and the city of Kunshan to create a world-class liberal arts and research university offering a range of academic programs for students from China and throughout the world, as well as research centers in critical areas of inquiry. A non-profit, joint-venture institution, Duke Kunshan University was granted accreditation approval by China’s Ministry of Education in September 2013 and welcomed its inaugural class of students in August 2014.

The Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) is a nonprofit organization that has served over 2.8 million academically talented students in grades four through twelve since 1980. Each year, Duke TIP enrolls nearly one hundred thousand new students in its talent searches. TIP's talent searches help these gifted students assess the extent of their abilities with above-level testing, recognizes them for their achievements, and provides them with a variety of enrichment benefits. TIP offers accelerated face-to-face and online educational programs to more than eight thousand students each year. In addition, TIP conducts research into the educational, emotional, and social factors impacting the lives of gifted children and shares this research with educators, parents, and the greater gifted community. 


The Duke University Talent Identification Program is dedicated to being a global leader in identifying academically talented students and providing innovative programs to support the development of their optimal educational potential.
