Jack Kerouac spent much of his youth trying, and failing, at fitting in—he dropped out of Colombia University, and then went on to fail Navy boot camp, chafing under military discipline.

Kerouac’s mainly autobiographical novel On The Road, about a series of cross-country road trips, described two friends traversing the American landscape in pursuit of fun, music, and making sense of the American dream.

The, impulsive, glorious wanderlust that characterizes On the Road, as well as Kerouac’s later works, made him one of the best known writers of the “Beat Generation”—a new generation of young 1950s iconoclasts.
