A STRIKING revamp of a 1930s home, including colourful patterned tiles and geometric shapes, was named Australia’s top renovation.

It was one of the eye-catching designs that ranked among the nation’s best at recent housing industry awards.

Victorian builders and designers won seven accolades at the HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards last week.

HIA managing director Shane Goodwin said the 2015 winners were remarkable.

“This year, we have seen outstanding projects,” he said.

A patterned motif in the kitchen is a standout feature of the best renovation/addition project, awarded to a home in Malvern.

Spacemaker Home Extensions renovated the 1930s residence, using Middle Eastern influences such as encaustic tiles, imported feature doors and geometric patterns.

The ground-floor living zone that opens to a north-facing entertaining area was a hit with the Housing Award judges.

A Kew townhouse loaded with extra features won the townhouse/villa category.

The BCG Constructions project has a striking facade, using a blend of metal, timber and brick cladding.

A gym, cellar and deluxe kitchen with butler’s pantry are extra features.

The sleek bathroom of a Glen Iris home was awarded bathroom of the year.

A freestanding bath is the centrepiece of the design, which has an open shower at the rear.
