Jobtitle: Big Data Developer

Purpose of position:

· As part of the IT Advisory team the Big DataDeveloper/Administrator is about 75% Development and 25% Administration. Hadoopexperience and at least 2 years of hands-on experience of Hadoop administrationis required.

· The Big Data Developer/Administrator providescode/design analysis and strategy, for developing complex projects on theHadoop ecosystem. This environment will include Hadoop and other big data toolsand products.

· The Big Data Developer/Administrator is responsiblefor the hands on processing and developing of custom solutions for variousdepartments.

· The Big Data Developer/Administrator works withinternal support teams to build/troubleshoot/fix Hadoop platforms.

· The Big Data Developer/Administrator will work withthe application teams to design and develop effective Hadoop/Data Sciencesolutions while documenting designs and procedures for building and managingHadoop related solutions.

Key accountabilities:

· Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals fordata warehousing and big data platform in conjunction with data users,department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders.

· Coordinate and work with other technical staff todevelop database/Hadoop/no sql architectures, coding standards, and qualityassurance policies and procedures.

· Plan and implement capacity and resource expansionto ensure data warehouse/Hadoop/nosql scalability.

· Responsible for implementation and ongoingadministration of Hadoop infrastructure.

· Aligning with the IT team to propose and deploy newhardware and software environments required for Hadoop and to expand existingenvironments.

· Working with data delivery teams to setup newHadoop users. This job includes setting up Linux users, setting up Kerberosprincipals and testing HDFS, Hive, Pig and MapReduce access for the new users.

· Cluster maintenance as well as creation and removalof nodes using tools like Ganglia,Nagios,Cloudera Manager Enterprise, Dell OpenManage and other tools.

· Data modelling, design & implementation basedon recognised standards.

Person specification:

· Experience working independently in a fast paced,unstructured environment

· A firm focus on high quality deliverables andmeeting deadlines.

· Ability to handle several ongoing projects at thesame time

· Hadoop skills like HBase, Hive, Pig, Mahout,mapreduce, spark, R, other RDBMS technologies etc.

· The most essential requirements are the ability todeploy Hadoop cluster, add and remove nodes, keep track of jobs, monitorcritical parts of the cluster, configure name-node high availability, scheduleand configure it and take backups.

· Good knowledge of Linux as Hadoop runs on Linux.

· Familiarity with open source configurationmanagement and deployment tools such as Puppet or Chef and Linux scripting.

· Knowledge of Troubleshooting Core Java Applicationsis a plus.

· Experience with very large datasets a must.

· Certifications in current big data platforms forexample cloudera, Horton works etc.

· Graduate or post graduate university degree in thefield of computer science, mathematics, or statistics, and/or equivalent workexperience as below:
- Two or more years in depth experience with Hadoop ecosystem
- Two or more years of Linux OS and system management experience
- Five or more years of at least one scripting language (pearl, python etc.)
- Three or more years’ experience in Java and similar language
