#AmericanMusic – Gospel/Spiritual: Gospel music sprung up from slave plantations in the American South. Slaves sang spiritual songs in the work fields and in church to express their anguish and hope. In the 1930s, Thomas A. Dorsey combined those spiritual songs with jazz and blues rhythms to write “Take My Hand, Precious Lord,” the first gospel song. If Dorsey was the “father of gospel,” Mahalia Jackson was undoubtedly its “queen.”  Jackson and her contemporaries provided the “soundtrack” for the U.S. civil rights movement; she even sang before and after Martin Luther King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Gospel remains a musical anthem for religious freedom, equality, and justice.
