You will curate, develop and make accessible the Chinese Collections, which include those of the Himalayan and Mongolian regions, within the East and Central Asia section of the Department of World Cultures. Working to the Head of Department and with the Senior Curator, Japanese and Korean Collections, your duties will include responsibility for the collections; acquisitions; exhibitions; research; publications; and answering public enquiries. Your key projects over the next three years will include the planning and development of a new East Asian gallery part of the HLF-funded project Revealing Cultures. The gallery will showcase our world-class Chinese, Japanese and Korean collections, using an extensive range of interpretive techniques, allied to learning and digital activity programming. The post will develop online content and contribute to national programming in addition to gallery delivery.
You must have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject area such as history of art or anthropology while a post graduate qualification in Chinese History of Art, Museum Studies or Heritage Studies is highly desirable. This is an early to mid-career post and you must have experience of working in a museum environment, be knowledgeable and enthusiastic primarily about Chinese collections, working with Himalayan and Mongolian collections as well. You should be able to demonstrate best practice in collections management. It is expected that you will have experience of undertaking research, responding to public enquiries and of preparing and delivering presentations. In addition to good verbal and written communication skills in English you will have proficiency in speaking, reading and writing Mandarin. Equally essential are ICT skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook together with knowledge of collections management databases. You must also be able to demonstrate your ability to plan and organise your workload, manage projects and build relationships within and outside of National Museums Scotland.
