NOOR KHAZEM

All the World’s a Game explores the gamification of human interaction, utilising the power of games in eliciting changes in our behaviour. The positive user experience from game play means that we engage, create, learn, and remember more. So can we play a print?

My print imagery has been made from games and 3D models I have designed and programmed. Instead of interacting with the textile itself, I have explored the idea that a textile could be the physical output of game play and digital interaction.

My prints are entirely Vegan and printed with eco friendly, water based ink.

Hybrid 21.16 explores the theme of hybrids and the relation between human and machine. Through my research I investigated how the human body could evolve in the future thanks to science and new technologies. Pushing print techniques, I’ve been able to aesthetically reproduce organic textures which resemble microorganisms, I have blended these with contrasting graphic patterns. It was very important to keep exploring traditional techniques like screen printing and hand embroidery through this project.

Atman, or World Soul, is a celebration of the origins of human creativity and life on the natural landscape.  Taking inspiration from the beauty of old cartography, alchemy and the spiritual language of indigenous cultures, it aims to create a thoughtful visual narrative of humanity and its introspective, yet primal side. The project has culminated in a set of printed fabrics, all of which are various forms of organic cotton, or peace silk, printed with natural and biodegradable screenprinting inks, and dyed with natural pigments.  A series of bioplastics has also been developed into various precious tools and adornments, stained and marbled with natural dyes.

Urban layers, geometric shapes, pops of colour, boundaries, shadows and textures from railway tracks, construction sites, fencing and plastic tubing all provided the starting points for this project. Focusing on a constructive approach to print, I explored the concept of layers and boundaries through the use of laser cutting, weaving and vinyls. This 3D approach was also translated into 2D related screen-printed designs using acid print pastes on Nylon Lycra.

The starting point of Inner Game was colour and how it can influence people’s moods and emotions. I illustrated an inner world inside people’s minds. The theme is subconsciousness, memories, and childhood. Hand-drawn patterns are based on doodles from my colour diary, which were inspired by visits to childhood museums. I set up scenes using toys and fabric I bought in a second-hand shop and took photos of them, combining the hand drawings and digital pictures. I looked at Tokyo street fashion that is colourful and cheerful. Piles of bright colours have been collaged together, creating a vivid and striking environment that may change both the wearers’ and the viewers’ mood.

In the initial stage of the Still Life Dreams & Nightmares, I produced a large body of paintings and drawings based on my dreams which I noted in a ‘dream diary.’  Later on, I would search museums and art galleries to find similar symbols and ‘collage’ different elements together to create ‘dream images/scenes’. I translated the paintings into 3D models to create a ‘dream set’ incorporating modified objects found in second-hand shops into the sets. I have used my paintings to develop a screen-printed collection, mixing pattern with portraits and figurative drawing while testing new materials which I found during my material research: lamé together with matte lacquer. In later stages of project development, I reversed the process and used matte fabric and shiny finishes like metallic foil and glitter.

Tren Union celebrates working classes. Understanding the importance of unity in society for the construction of a better future, this project explores techniques used in urban construction, recreating them in a fashion context, manipulating a range of fabrics. Taking inspiration from the core of society, initial work embarked upon modest cottons, calicos and canvases before translating outcomes onto luxurious silks. Tren Union focuses on the construction of printed textiles through alternative printing, dying and manipulation processes. The processes embrace imperfections in the creative development. The works are the result of a spontaneous working method. They live in the moment and cannot be recreated. They are unplanned, but are the product of strenuous and reflective experimentation into textile processes.

AMANDA TSUI

This project is originally inspired by the mood of isolation that is evoked when surrounded by the vastness of landscapes. Through the exploration of different playful means of mimicking the visual characteristics of landscape images, my abstract landscape images are translated into printed textile designs for fashion through the combination of digital and traditional screen-printing techniques.

Big and bold, COLLARGED is the product of a playful exploration of pattern in purpose-built landscapes. With a ‘we’ll see where this goes’ approach, I began using collage allowing each design to influence the next to create a variety of pattern-focused textiles for interiors.

IRENE INFANTES

My research began with the exploration of the hidden values of objects and the cycle process of materials. I started taking pictures of everything interesting or colourful I found on the floor of different areas in London, always wondering how those objects got to that exact place, forgotten on the floor and devalued. What is a water bottle without a cap? Final pieces were produced in through experimental and artisanal processes, working at a large scale and using texture rich merino wool. Geometrical shapes were screen printed and needle punched with felt using a four colour base.
