The Crowd and Cloud: Citizens + Scientists: Movie Screening and Discussion

This program will be conducted in English . The movie will be in English with English subtitles.

You don’t need to be an expert to monitor water quality, protect wildlife, or report polluters to government officials.  Scientific research or data collection conducted by average citizens is known as citizen science.  Scientists and government officials can’t monitor the entire length of a river or every acre in large nature reserves on their own.  Citizen science empowers all of us to bring environmental problems to light and encourage our government leaders to find solutions.

Join us at the Beijing American Center on Tuesday, August 1st 6:30 – 8:30 P.M. for a screening and discussion of the documentary film “The Crowd and Cloud: Citizens + Scientists.”  This film shows citizen science in action, including American fishermen and volunteers who monitor shale and gas companies’ pollution of local rivers and streams, and Chinese NGOs that maps where industrial polluters were illegally dumping their discharge in remote parts of rivers.  Following the screening, three organizations practicing citizen science in China will discuss their efforts to empower everyday people to become citizen scientists.

This program is not suitable for children under 6.
