Although she never set out to write overtly feminist literature, Sylvia Plath is regarded in popular culture today almost as a feminist martyr. She is best known for The Bell Jar, a disturbing roman a clef (a novel in which real people or events appear with invented names) in which a brilliant and beautiful young female protagonist struggles with her desire to be independent in conformist 1960s society, which preferred that women aspire to marriage and motherhood. She descends into madness and an obsession with death, reflecting Plath’s own descent into depression (she would in fact later die of suicide). Despite its darkness, the novel remains widely read today. Plath is also remembered also for her confessional poems, which read as visceral counterblasts against misogyny, patriarchy, and domesticity.
