The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Amy Tan, rejected her parents’ expectations that she become a doctor or concert pianist, and chose to write fiction instead. Tan draws upon her own life experiences to explore the anxieties and struggles of Chinese-Americans, as well as the complex dynamics of Chinese and Chinese-American mother-daughter relationships clouded by generational and cultural differences.
