An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Mandarin speaking researcher to work on a project to improve the treatment and communication of uncertainty for climate services in China. The project is funded by the Climate Science for Services Partnership China programme, which is delivered by the Met Office on behalf of the Newton Fund.

This post is based in Leeds, UK, and will involve frequent travel to China to conduct elicitations and interviews with climate scientists, and climate service users in priority sectors (likely to include water, energy, agriculture, and urban environment). Working with Dr Andrea Taylor and Professor Suraje Dessai, you will conduct expert elicitations with Chinese and UK scientists to explore current treatments of uncertainty, and interviews with users to explore how uncertainty in climate information is interpreted and used in decision making. Using this data you will work with Dr Yim Ling Siu to identify which sources of uncertainty are most important for climate service provision in priority sectors.

You will have a high standard of spoken Mandarin, possess quantitative and qualitative research skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, time management and IT skills. Experience of conducting user needs research or stakeholder engagement work in a Chinese cultural context would be an advantage.
