「Topic」In developing countries, some people believe government should introduce new technology to people to improve the quality of life, while others believe government should provide free education. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Governments play many roles in society and affect people’s lives in many ways. Some feel that it is a government’s responsibility to improve living standards for its citizens, but there is a current debate on how best to do that, through the introduction of technology or with the provision of free education. I believe free education is the correct choice, and I will explain why in this essay, after discussing both options.

With regard to technology, the convenience offered is certainly advantageous in everyday life. Computers and smart phones have brought the ability to access information or complete tasks almost instantaneously, even removing location as a factor. If government provides people with the most up to date technology, people’s lives will continue to improve. For instance, a person can now check their account balance and transfer money from one bank account to another, all while standing in line to buy a product, a task that was much more difficult as recently as ten years ago.

When considering education, cheaper tuition could lead to a better society. Currently, student loan debts in the United States are placing heavy burdens on collegiate students and graduates, while simultaneously dragging down the economy due to lower spending. Furthermore, studies show that more educated populations and people tend to have lower crime rates and less substance abuse, further restraining economic and government resources. Consequentially, if higher education were cheaper, or free, society could improve significantly. Specifically, Germany, which is quite possibly the strongest country economically in the European Union these days, has nearly free higher education.

When considering the role of government and how to improve people’s lives, I think the cost of education should be lowered. In an effort to promote social and class mobility, education is a cog that cannot be understated. Additionally, technology is product of innovation and business, but government would not need to provide it if everyone is given the best chance to make something of themselves.

In conclusion, I feel governmental spending should be focused on the provision of education, as it can improve society through stronger economies and lower crime, whilst technological advancement can be provided by private sectors.
