#AmericanMusic – Heavy Metal/Grunge: One of the more unconventional musical genres, Heavy Metal came from more familiar styles of rock & roll and blues. In 1970, British rock band Black Sabbath included crashing drums and aggressive guitar riffs in its first song “Iron Man.” The genre quickly spread to the U.S. west coast, where “thrash bands” like Metallica and Megadeath popularized the genre.

In the 1990s, rainy Seattle was the birthplace of the illegitimate offspring of heavy metal and punk the world came to know as grunge.  

While Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit” captured imaginations and Pearl Jam captured sales, the scene's most enduring band was arguably Soundgarden.  Originally formed in 1984, the band rose to prominence with the advent of the Seattle "scene" in the early 1990s.  Their 1994 album Superunknown won Soundgarden mainstream success, with the song "Black Hole Sun" winning a 1995 Grammy award for "Best Hard Rock Performance."
