1970年代诞生于纽约街头的饶舌和嘻哈音乐已经成为中心市区非洲和拉丁裔美国音乐文化的主力。 一开始只是DJ们在舞蹈俱乐部里用唱盘对不同的歌曲进行“混音”和“取样” 。原先在舞蹈里作为助场伴唱的MC就开始跟着DJ的节奏即兴编歌词,于是出现了最早的“饶舌歌手”。随着初创音乐品牌 Def Jam把纽约的 Cool J 和 Run DMC带向郊区和全国,饶舌和嘻哈进入了主流。


虽然一些饶舌歌手完全是为了娱乐目的写歌,其他一些,尤其是 Boogie Down Production的成员 KRS-One,用他们的音乐来凸显社会的不公正现象。如今因为有Jay-Z, Eminem、Lil’ Wayne、Kanye West、 Nicki Minaj和Drake这样的音乐人,饶舌和嘻哈在美国一直都是最具活力和创意的音乐类型之一。

#AmericanMusic – Rap/Hip-Hop: Born in the streets of New York City in the 1970s, Rap and Hip-Hop have become staples of inner-city African- and Latin-American music culture. It all began when DJs started using turntables to “mix” and “sample” different songs at dance clubs. The MCs at those dances, who originally served as hype men, started improvising lyrics to the DJ’s beats—the first “rappers.”  Rap and hip-hop entered the mainstream when start-up music label Def Jam brought New York's LL Cool J and Run DMC into the suburbs and across the country.  


While some rappers write songs for strictly entertainment, others, notably Boogie Down Production's KRS-One, use their music to highlight social injustice.
