华盛顿D.C.

#AmericanDiversity – Diaspora: Salvadorians in Washington DC

The Latino American community is diverse and geographically spread out throughout the United States. When many Americans hear the word “Latino” they immediately think Mexican, as Mexicans represent about 70 percent of the Latino American community. However, in Washington, D.C., instead of Mexican tacos, you’ll find Salvadoran pupusas. That’s because in the nation’s capital, it is the Salvadoran community that dominates local Latino culture.

The Salvadoran community in D.C. also had a profound influence on Salvadorans living in El Salvador. Salvadorans send money to their families back home, making up an astonishing 17 percent of the country’s GDP! That’s the second-highest percentage in Latin America. The distinctive blue and white flag can be seen flying throughout the region and their music and tasty cuisines are ubiquitous.  So next time you’re in D.C., stop into a Salvadoran restaurant, and taste the best pupusas in North America!

Have you ever tried Salvadorian food?
