The Post

We wish to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Heritage Studies to a new full time post on a fixed term contract for twelve months. The post will be based in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH). The successful candidate will have an established research focus on heritage in Asia, ideally with direct expertise in China and/or South East Asia. Preference will be shown for applicants with a background in heritage studies, and an understanding of the political and economic contexts of heritage in Asia. Research interests in one or more of the following themes would also be of benefit: heritage conservation; heritage tourism; ‘heritage diplomacy’; World Heritage; community engagement and education; heritage sustainability in the context of rapid development.

 

The appointee will assist with the establishment of a new Chinese partnership, and an associated research centre. He/she will also take the lead on the organisation of an international heritage conference, which will provide a launch for the new partnership. The successful candidate will actively pursue research funding and assist in writing bids for the Centre. The appointee will also undertake a personal programme of internationally excellent research and publication. He/she will pursue other duties as presecribed by the Dean of Faculty, Professor Richard Oram. Mentoring will be provided by Professor Siân Jones.


Description Of Duties

The post-holder will assist with delivering an international conference and support the development of a new Chinese partnership, including an associated research centre, which will sit alongside the Centre for Environment, Heritage and Policy. The main emphasis in the post-holder’s duties will be on building strategic networks (both internal and external), as well as writing grant applications and generating research income.


The Successful Candidate Will

-   Enhance research capacity in the area of heritage and conservation in Asia

-   Assist in the development of a new Chinese heritage partnership, including the establishment of a dedicated research centre

-   Play a major role in the organisation of an international heritage conference

-   Build on and develop the existing networks of researchers across the University working on topics of relevance to heritage and conservation

-   Assist with the development of a strategic, University-wide approach to research development and impact

-   Write funding applications for research projects that build on existing expertise in the area heritage and conservation

-   Assist with writing proposals in response to external calls and other stakeholder requests for research project development

-   Focus on the development of two or three key areas of research for original proposal development

-   Produce high-quality publications of an internationally excellent standard


Essential Criteria

-   A PhD in a relevant field

-   Good first and/or masters degree(s) in relevant fields

-   An established research focus on heritage in Asia

-   Capacity to develop and support strategic networks

-   Capacity to contribute to the development of research proposals

-   Experience of multi-disciplinary and / or multi-professional contexts

-   A successful track record of publication

-   Experience of research impact and / or knowledge exchange activities

-   Effective interpersonal skills including communication and team-working skills

-   Self-reliance and motivation, alongside an ability to work collaboratively


Desirable Criteria

-   Direct expertise in the heritage of China and/or South East Asia

-   Experience of contributing to the production of successful research proposals

-   A successful track record of organising conferences and workshops

-   Experience of developing and / or supporting and maintaining strategic networks, especially research networks

-   A track record of publication in peer reviewed journal articles of Research Excellence Framework (REF) standard
