#AmericanDiversity – American Religious Diversity

In addition to ethnic diversity, the United States also benefits from its religious diversity. Historically, America was seen as a safe haven for persecuted religious Christian minorities from Europe, who braved the transatlantic voyage to freely practice their religions.

Over time, waves of immigrants have contributed to the changing religious composition of America. However, more than religious affiliation, what distinguishes the United States is its religious tolerance, a value that was enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution, guaranteeing the free practice of religion, which has been respected generation after generation.

To get a sense of changing attitudes towards religion, read President John F. Kennedy’s historic speech on what it meant to be America’s first Catholic President here (eng): http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16920600
