ROLE PROFILE

Over the past year, King’s has successfully established a significant in-country presence in both Beijing and Shanghai in collaboration with CBBC, which has supported the university’s partnerships and commercial activity in China. As the University looks to operationalise its new International Strategy and to deepen and broaden its scope of partnership and education activities both within and beyond China, King’s seeks to appoint a Regional Head to cover the East Asia region.

This is a central role supporting the development and implementation of the University’s International strategy and will include, inter alia:

  • Representing King’s as its Regional Head and promoting the King’s brand in East Asia, namely: China, including Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan

  • Supporting existing and helping to develop new partnerships between King’s and universities, research institutes and schools in the region in support of research and teaching objectives

  • Developing contacts with government, public and private sector organisations in furtherance of the King’s’ research, knowledge transfer, international mobility and internships strategies

  • Supporting King’s alumni associations in the region

  • Supporting East Asia related activities of King’s academic and professional service units

Based in either Beijing or Shanghai but expected to travel as necessary including internationally, the post will work closely with various internal stakeholders at King’s including the directorates of Research, Education, External Relations, Development & Alumni and others.

Drawing upon a deep understanding and experience of UK Universities (ideally Russell Group), coupled with demonstrable understanding and ability to engage at senior levels with government, corporate and partner organisations in East Asia, this pivotal role will support and expand the University’s growing East Asia relationships and activity.

The postholder will be expected to come from a senior academic or professional services higher education background.

Secondments and part time working will be considered.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

1) Working closely with colleagues across the University, including staff in the directorates of Research, Education, External Relations, Development & Alumni and others to support the development and maintenance of research, teaching and business partnership activity in the East Asia region. This work will include:

a) Supporting the development of research links with Higher Education Institutions in the region and liaising with academic colleagues as appropriate

b) Identifying research opportunities and research funding calls. This will include developing relationships with the British Embassy, Science & Innovation Network, UKTI, RCUK and British Council offices in East Asia countries as well as East Asian research institutes and funding organisations

c) Working with government agencies to ensure the University is aware of necessary HE developments and legislation

d) Developing links with companies and British Chambers of Commerce in order to develop R&D, internship and training opportunities

e) Working with corporate bodies to support developments such as technology licensing, spin out companies and joint ventures.

2) Identifying teaching partnership opportunities and working with the Global Engagement team to negotiate agreements and help deliver these successfully.

3) Significant travel to support research and teaching partnership development. Supporting visits from University staff, both professional services and academic. Devising and arranging itineraries, making arrangements for travel plans, assisting in putting together appropriate briefings and background information for visits.

Support for inward and outward delegations and industry missions where applicable.

4) Ensuring effective PR, marketing and communications activities in order to keep the academic and administrative communities at the University aware of partnership opportunities/ HE developments/ Government initiatives in East Asian countries.

a) Providing tailored information and intelligence for specific activities in East Asian countries, including for example, funding schemes, scholarship schemes etc.

b) Writing a regular newsletter, progress reports and developing other social media tools, such as a blog.

c) Pro-active networking with relevant contacts to build relationships and information.

d) Constructing and updating a Customer Relationship Management system aligned with University systems.

e) To assist with promotional activity to raise the profile and brand equity of King’s College London including academic missions, research initiatives, alumni events etc.

f) To develop relations with local and national media, translate press releases and ensure stories are placed in relevant media, and work in close cooperation with King’s International PR staff

g) To work with and support, where appropriate, King’s International Marketing staff

5) To support the alumni networks in East Asian countries working in close cooperation with the International Alumni team at King’s.

a) Extending and improving alumni relations in East Asian countries, including supporting alumni events and working with alumni groups.

b) Supporting the development of internship opportunities for alumni and current students.

c) Improving data on East Asian alumni.

6) Line management of local staff as directed.

7) Any other business relating to the University’s International strategy.

8) Any other duties as directed by line manager.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications/ Education

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, ideally from a UK institution.

  • Higher degree, with a research component.

Skills/Training

  • Proven ability to work and communicate fluently in the UK and East Asia region

  • Excellent communications skills (written, oral and presentation) in English and at least one East Asian country language

  • Excellent computing skills

  • Negotiation skills

  • Excellent report writing skills

  • The ability to interact with and influence senior stakeholders

  • Experience of new social media

Experience

  • Experience of the development of UK-East Asian partnerships

  • Good understanding of UK Universities and the development opportunities offered in East Asia region

  • The ability to work well in teams and communicate effectively

  • Demonstrable project management skills and ability to plan effectively

  • Demonstrable success in pro-actively managing projects

  • Experience and understanding of both the UK and East Asia region landscape for research

  • Understanding of how East Asian member government organisations operate

  • Experience of representing a UK organisation or company in the East Asia region

  • Specific experience of University partnerships with East Asian organisations preferably in the research environment.

  • Direct experience of UK-East Asian countries partnership development and/or project delivery

  • Clear understanding around the demands and expectations of companies regarding education

  • Experience of liaison and project management at corporate or government level.

The job holders will report administratively to CBBC’s office managers in Beijing/Shanghai, and functionally will report to and be supported by Head of Global Engagement with dotted line to Director of International.
