As per the annual migration report released by the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics) the proportion of Australians born overseas is at its peak in over 120 years at 28.2% (6.7 million).

This boom is hugely due to migrants from India and China, and there has been a constant rise every year since the last 15 years. India has tripled whereas China has more than doubled in the last 10 years. The statistics owe this report mainly by observing the median age of certain age groups.

Over 207,900 migrants settled permanently in Australia during 2013-14 and figures show one-third of those migrants came from India. The trend continues with about 30,000 migrants opting for the Australian citizenship in the same year.

This is also due to the Modi government’s outreach for connecting with the community, and making Australia their new home. India has remained the main source of migrants for Australia and has left the British, Kiwis and Chinese people behind.

Migration continues to be the main reason for population growth in Australia. Between June 1996 and June 2013, Australia's overseas-born population grew by 51.2% to 6.4 m.

The substantial growth in overseas-born residents is changing Australia's ethnic composition. In the past 17 years, the number of China-born Australian residents has more than tripled to 427,590 people.

The reports from the federal government also confirm the primary source of immigrants in Australia is from India. Statistics on Australia’s migration program, released by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, show Australia received 189,097 immigrants in the 2014-15 year. Those immigrants include people who were accepted under the family, skill and special eligibility streams. The migration program does not include refugees.
