Providing people with disabilities full and equal access to public facilities, education, employment and transportation is a continuing challenge, but the Americans with Disabilities Act helps a large portion of America’s population achieve its full potential. There are 54 million people with disabilities in the United States. What is the history of the disability rights movement in the U.S.? How can legislation support the rights of people with disabilities?
Please join us at the Beijing American Center for a panel discussion with several senior U.S. government officials and members of American civil society to learn about both the victories won and the challenges faced by the disability rights movement. Our panelists include Judith E. Heumann , Special Advisor on International Disability Rights, U.S. Department of State; Michael Yudin, Assistant Secretary, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, U.S. Department of Education; Jennifer Sheehy, Acting Assistant Secretary, Office of Disability Employment Policy, U.S. Department of Labor; and Dr. Amanda Kraus, Disability Resources, Assistant Professor at University of Arizona.
