John Piper became well known as a painter of architecture, romanticised to suggest its place in history. This interest perhaps stemmed from a commission in 1940 from the Recording Britain scheme that employed 97 artists to depict 1,549 heritage sites that might not survive the war or subsequent developments.

He accepted numerous commissions and this print is one of a series of eight entitled Victorian Dream Palaces. Ettington Park, near Stratford-on-Avon, was the home of the Shirley family. The present house was rebuilt on foundations of Saxon origin in 1862 to designs by John Shirley.

In this year at Warwick:

WMG正式成立。

Peter Sedgley studied architecture before moving on to painting in the 1960s. Much of his work examines optical effects and was influenced by artists such as Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley.

In this print, each stripe is made of two or three colours which set up an optical dazzle. The artist would have had to make a separate screen for each colour and the resulting print demonstrates a very precise way of working since the colours join each other faultlessly.

In this year at Warwick:

Fay Godwin achieved recognition as one of the outstanding photographers of her generation and a supreme exponent of studies of the British landscape.

Her images are never sentimental and she was acutely aware of the way the natural environment has been changed through the occupation and intervention of past and present generations.

Her books often involved collaboration with eminent literary figures, including John Fowles, Ted Hughes and Alan Sillitoe. The most influential of her books was Land (1985), a compilation of work carried out over a ten year period which sealed her reputation as an artist with both critics and the public.
