Role Summary
This newly created international role supports the firm’s goal to increase our share of profitable China Outbound investment work, an area identified to be of critical strategic importance to the firm. This role will report in to the Head of MBD Asia, but with day to day interaction with the Head of the China Connect Group, currently based in London and the broader China Connect Leadership Team.
Aim
The aim of China Connect is to focus energy and available resources on:
building business with Chinese clients as worldwide clients of the firm
improving the quality, status and integration of the Mandarin-speaking lawyers in our firm’s global network
facilitating effective responses from the global network to work, marketing and recruitment opportunities for China outbound, and directing valuable Mandarin-speaking resources towards supporting partners worldwide whoundertake China outbound and inbound work
Key Responsibilities
Client Relationship Management
Relationship development (external): Working with the SOE BDM, China Partners and China Connect leadership group and other relevant partners across the firm to assist with the planning of and preparation for external relationship review meetings with Chinese clients
Acting as a point of contact for the client on all aspects of relationship management and service delivery
External agency engagement: developing and maintaining contacts with the relevant agencies (embassies and others) in Europe / US / elsewhere that host Chinese trade and business delegations
Ad hoc support to the Sector Groups: If and when required the role holder will work with the Sector Groups to support the management of key Chinese subsidiaries in London e.g. Chinese Banks with offices in London
Programme Support
China Connect programme support: design and implement effective plans to ensure continuous engagement between China fee-earners who “own” the key relationships in China with other fee–earners around the global network and China MBD,L&D and HR and their counter parts in the global network
Work with the Learning and Development (L&D) team: help develop programme and materials to refocus L&D on issues facing Chinese clients doing business outside of China and enhancing quality of legal services and also to help foster a strong sense of community and shared purpose among lawyers working on China Connect type business across the firm
Business Development
Business development planning and targeting: supporting client targetinginitiatives, including co-ordinating with the China business development manager, other practice groups, sector groups or offices targeting the same clients and monitoring progress
Assisting with developing the China Outbound business plans and associated action plans
Analysing the clients: working with the China business development manager, and China Connect leadership group to map the client organisation with a view to identifying reporting lines, key decision makers, areas of work and gaps in our coverage of the relationship Developing an understanding of the client’s strategy, products and services and ensuring it is communicated / shared acrossthe client team
Conducting financial analysis to identify and better understand the source of revenue in line with the client’s own organisation / structure
Research, analysis and reporting: undertaking internal / external research and analysis (either directly or via specialist internal / external sources) on clients, targets, markets, competitors, rankings etc. and helping identify key existing clients and targets for new business
Pitches / proposals / brochures: researching, developing and providing input and experience for pitches both through the MBD team and directly to lawyers around the network
Maintaining an up-to-date suite of Chinese brochures and other marketing materials
Assisting in the development of new marketing materials through co-ordinating drafting, proofing and production of materials
Experience collection: maintaining a central experience resource identifying China matters carried out by PGs and regions, verifying descriptions and supporting information with relevant partners / associates, and recording onto the relevant experience databases
Preparation and maintenance of the most frequently used experience lists
Client mailshots: co-ordinating mailings for client newsletters and briefings
Developing and maintaining mailing lists and updating as necessary, using the firm’s client relationship database
Client / sector seminars / events with a China bias: organising client / sector seminars / conferences, including sourcing venues, preparing invite lists, mailing invitations, co-ordinating conference materials and ensuring pro-active follow up
Continual liaison with relevant partners
Inputting on the agenda for China Connect calls, working with the China Connect leadership team in running them, keeping a log of follow-up actions and implementation

Requirements
Excellent communication skills (written and verbal, English and Mandarin) with confidence and ability to deal with partners, senior lawyers and staff at all levels
Proven organisational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines across timezones
Ability to take initiatives and challenge status quo
Ability to handle several projects at one time and to prioritise workload
Able to contribute at a strategic level as well as to implement and drive initiatives through to a successful conclusion
Team player, reliable, flexible, helpful and willing to work beyond contracted hours from time to time (Multi-disciplinary approach)
Demonstrable track record of working with partners or senior executives in international business
Based in London, but with travel most likely within Europe
The Individual
Essential
Mandarin speaking and fluent English
Degree educated
Excellent systems and database skills including experience of windows-based packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Experience working for a Chinese SOE or Private Company or within China
Experience of working in an international business from a European base
Desirable
Experience of working in a legal or professional services firm
Relevant business / marketing qualification
