This program will be conducted in Chinese and English.
David Moser first came to China in 1987 and hoping to improve his spoken Chinese, discovered a traditional form of Chinese humor called xiangsheng 相声 (“crosstalk”). He began to study with crosstalk performer Ding Guangquan and quickly started doing spots on TV. Moser and Ding will talk about the phenomenon of foreigners going on Chinese TV, about the role of humor in promoting cross-cultural understanding, and how Chinese humor forms have evolved due to television, Chinese economic growth, and the influence of foreign entertainment styles. Do all cultures laugh at the same things? What are the differences between 相声 and American stand-up comedy? And how will the increasing influence of Chinese comedians such as Zhou Libo 周立波, Guo Degang 郭德纲, and Joe Wong 黄西 effect the sense of humor in other countries?
This program is not suitable for children under 6.
