A coalition of Victoriancommunity housing organisations is warning candidates not to forget thehomeless in the state election campaign.

Advocates said Victorianeeds an extra 50,000 public and community housing properties to meet demand.

They said an investmentof $200 million a year for the next two decades would be needed to bringVictoria's public housing stocks up to par with the rest of Australia.

There are now 22,000people living on the streets in Victoria and affordable housing is rare.

And there is a new classof white-collar homelessness.

"I know of peoplewho go to office jobs and would fit within the definition of homelessnessoutside of office hours," Mr Lang said.

"The only time they have access to creature comforts is within business hours."

Huge unmet demand for affordable housing

A recent housing forumwas told Victoria needs to invest in 2,000 new affordable dwellings per yearjust to catch up.

Yarra Community Housingreported a 23 per cent increase in requests for crisis accommodation in thelast financial year.

Chief executive officerRob Leslie said it costs $22,000 in Commonwealth and State funds to supportevery household squeezed out of private rental back into public housing.

"A lot of peoplefall out of homelessness, end up in the criminal justice system, they end up inprison, which is very expensive," he said.

"They end up usingacute psychiatric wards. They end up using police services, emergencyservices."

Mr Leslie said Victoriais well below the national average of 5 per cent of all housing being publicand community housing.

"We probably need50,000 properties now, to meet the unmet demand," he said.

For the past two years,Mr Lang has been paying a more sustainable 30 per cent of his income onaccommodation organised by a friend.

He called on Victorianpoliticians to commit to a policy that "envisages inclusiveness for all Victorians".

"We live inreputedly the world's most liveable city, why can't it be the world's mostliveable city for all Victorians?" he said.
