The American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (AmCham Shanghai) is a non-partisan, non-profit business organization established in 1915. It is the third overseas American chamber to operate worldwide, established only three years after the founding of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. AmCham Shanghai was resurrected in1987 after a break of 38 years, and is now among the two largest AmChams in Asia, alongside AmCham Japan. 
AmCham Shanghai represents 1,700 companies and 3,800 individual members and is growing by an average of 80 new members per month. We are committed to the principles of free trade, open markets, private enterprise and the unrestricted flow of information.

Job Description:  Membership Development Manager

Position Objective:

This is a new position focused on expanding the Chamber’s corporate membership base through new membership growth programs and following a more assertive approach to membership sales than the Chamber has followed in the past. The incumbent will be responsible for developing new strategies that will boost Chamber corporate membership from its current level of 1650 corporate members. The incumbent will be responsible for adding at least 100 new corporate members in 2016. The incumbent will direct a team of two persons. 

Membership Development Manager 

Reporting line:  TBD

Key role and responsibilities:   

  1. Direct the Chamber’s sales work for corporate memberships.

  2. Develop and execute a sales strategy plan.

  3. Develop new and innovative membership development channels, programs, partnerships and activities.                             

  4. Accelerate the Chamber’s transition to a more assertive approach to membership sales.

  5. Successfully add 100 new corporate members in 2016 and help achieve an overall target of 400 new corporate members in 2016.

  6. Handle sales inquiries and close sales deals to reach expats, internationals and multinationals.

  7. Understand and use the Chamber’s CSR system to keep track of sales work.         

  8. Create Monthly Sales Reports, listing contacts made by phone, email, and in person, with results and follow-up action plan. Submit Call Plan with prospects identified for the following week. 

  9. Promote the Member Referral Program.

  10. Support programs to ensure retention targets are met.     


Qualifications (Skills and experience required):

  • 8-10 year experience in Business Development and Membership Sales 

  • Experience in both sales process and people management

  • Excellent connections in expat communities

  • Strong relationship with foreign companies

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Fluent verbal and written English; Chinese language skills a plus

  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and surpass targets

  • Flexible, adaptive, and mission driven
