The Opportunity

The Global Business Development Manager will take responsibility for supporting and helping to implement the King & Wood Mallesons global strategy. Specifically, the role will focus on:

  • Implementation and management of KWM’s global client programme.

  • Supporting and executing cross-border M&A (XBMA) initiatives, including identifying investment opportunities, strategic client pursuits, responding to cross-border tenders, and obtaining client feedback.

  • Planning and executing global campaigns to support the KWM global brand BD strategy.


   Key Accountabilities

Global Client Relationship Management

  • Monitor and provide regular reports on achievements and developments for key global clients

  • Work with Global Client Relationship Partners and Regional Client Relationship managers as required to manage client relationships for Top 10 global key clients

  • Develop and drive the implementation of client relationship plans, focusing on client retention, the profitable growth of relationships (including a sound understanding of the drivers of profitability)

  • Drive specific revenue generation cross-selling opportunities within the global client base and champion an initiatives around gaps and targets

  • Drive internal partner and BD engagement, ensuring relentless focus on the firm’s key global clients from across the network

  • Monitor client activity in the region and globally, and proactively identify potential opportunities and look for ways to bring more of KWM’s capabilities to clients, both inside local jurisdiction and internationally

  • Undertake client feedback sessions, identifying opportunities for improvement and new business



Cross-Border Team Development / New Business

  • Take a lead role in implementing regional business development activities to support the global strategy as outlined in the Global Business Development plan

  • Take a lead role in the development and production of best practice global pitch material for use by XBMA Team

  • Provide support as required on XBMA Team proposals (ranging from tailored capability statements to large scale panel tenders) and beauty-parades

  • Facilitate cross-selling between global practice teams

  • Proactively research and analyse business, industry, competitors and trends, identifying opportunities for client engagement and developing an opportunities “pipeline”

  • Proactively engage XBMA partners on the development of a “pipeline” mindset and prompt partners to undertake activities that increase the speed of the pipeline

  • Take responsibility for maintaining a XBMA deals database



Integrated Global Marketing Campaigns / Brand Marketing

  • Cross-border deal profiling: working closely with the Communications team take every opportunity to promote the KWM global brand through cross-border deal profiling and other relevant initiatives

  • In partnership with local, regional and global BD and Marketing teams plan and execute global integrated marketing campaigns that support Global BD initiatives, including:

  • Global thought leadership: identify future trends, develop positioning angles, and drive the implementation of global thought leadership reports and campaigns

  • Global road shows: plan, coordinate, support, measure and report on cross-border international partner visits, which may include individual client visits, targeted roundtables and broader firm-wide events

  • Sponsorships and other profiling opportunities: Identify relevant profiling opportunities in line with the firm’s global business plans and work with the relevant partners and BD & Marketing teams as required, to ensure all entitlements associated with sponsorships are met and the opportunity is maximised



Regional BD Team Engagement

Work closely with the regional BD team, communicating clearly and consistently and taking acoordinated approach to executing global BD initiatives.



Skills / Knowledge Required

  • Demonstrated track record in global (or cross-border) Client Relationship Management

  • Demonstrated track record in global (or cross-border) business development management

  • Qualification in marketing, commerce, law or business

  • Sound written and verbal communications skills

  • Mandarin skills preferred

  • A sound understanding of marketing concepts for the implementation of successful marketing programs



Performance Indicators

  • Demonstrated proactive approach to identifying ideas for business, client and brand development

  • Delivery of tasks as assigned by manager, partners, legal staff in accordance with dates set

  • Effective and professional liaison with all local and international marketing team members

  • Rapport with partners and lawyers as evidenced by feedback

  • Development and execution of ideas to raise the firm’s profile and deepen client and key stakeholder relationships

  • Willingness to take on new responsibilities to support the global firm’s strategy

  • Consistent delivery of superior client service and building strong and enduring client relationships

  • Support the firm’s values and standards of professionalism and integrity, and is committed to the firm, its culture and goals.
