I decided to study in Australia in early 2008, and the reason why I chose Canberra to be my destination was that it is a beautiful and peaceful city with a small population, and my family friends are living there for several years. The main reason is ACT does not decide our fate based on one assessment, instead of that the results from every single test in the two years give out a point called ATAR, which is fairly enough.

The first time when I arrived in Canberra I was sent to an Australian family; to live with an old lady who was my homestay. At this moment, I could not believe I had been living with her for 2 years. I believe the best thing about living in homestay accommodation is feeling like part of the family and learning about Australian customs and traditions first hand; my favorite is learning to cook Australian recipes. I also feel lucky to live with other international students as they share a similar cultural experience. Not least of all, it ensures all members of the household speak the only language common to them all: English. I have meals prepared for me; for example, allow me to concentrate completely on my studies. And every night before having dinner, all of us should say “good appetite” in all the languages we speak, it is like a kind of their tradition.

I felt it is a sensible decision to stay with local people due to the priority of many stuff. For example, when you have done an essay it can be fixed up soon by them; they would like to chat with you after dinner about Australian history or their family stories, no matter they are weird or funny, it not only helps to fill up our knowledge but also enables us to practice English every day, it is better than any way we are trying to find out to get practice of spoken language. In addition, I felt huge advantages when I went to see the doctor; my housemother explained the complicated medical vocabulary into common language for me to get it easily.

It was a wise decision to complete college in Australia. First of all, studying in Australia is very different from China; students can choose whatever they are interested in to do, there is no pushing, no forcing and no pressure.

The first 5 months in school was orientation stage, the results we get from the class does not be counted into our final ATAR, so I had done hospitality, chemistry and some other courses which are helpful to my English.

For the next two years, year11 and year12 are the part and parcel. I had done double math, science and some language courses while English is the only subject that everyone has to do. The reason I was doing 5 majors was that they are the regions I was accomplished in, and also they are my favorite. According to preview, listening, thinking and review are the keys to achieve an excellent result from test, how hard you are trying to practice depends on how much you love this topic. Thus, choosing a right subject is really important. Obviously, the assignments I got in Year 12 were much harder than Year11, it is not the language problem this time, instead, it is the deeper thinking and everything was going to be totally new, what we were learning was the stuff that we never heard about before. So what many students believe that if we tried in year11, the next year we would be relaxed seems wrong, actually we need to be more focus on it in year 12.

On another hand, college life let us know a lot of friends and lovely teachers; we shared different cultures and learned many languages. Because most of us were not doing any sport classes, our group of friends enjoyed badminton once every week instead of sports, which was pretty good.

Nevertheless, I completed many businesses in Year 12. I found a job in a restaurant for accumulated experience and also knew lots of friends there which were quite good; I felt like it was time to be independent for the last half year of college, and then I moved out and living by myself. It was not that simple as I have to go shopping after school, cook for myself and wash dishes everyday. Everything has been totally different with what I thought. After a period of time, I was accustomed to the housework and I also got my driver’s license in the same year.

Anyway, college life is significant, comfortable, joyous and is a great memory.
