Thursday, May 5, 18:30  Reading and Performance of American AuthorLeah Griesmann’s Short Story Stripped

To celebrate American authors, the Shanghai American Center is proud to welcome Shanghai-based author LeahGriesmann who will present her latest short story collection about Las Vegascalled Stripped.  Leah is anaward-winning writer who is currently writer-in-residence at the Swatch ArtPeace Hotel where she is at work on a novel and set of short stories.  Shewill be joined by Shanghai actors Erin Peisert and David Warner, who willperform select stories from Stripped.

ABOUT STRIPPED : “It’s several years into the new millennium and LasVegas has seen more growth than any other major American city. From across thecountry and beyond the border, new settlers arrive in the desert metropolis towork in the booming service industry, the burgeoning real estate market, andthe professional sectors that accompany major urban development. In these worksof literary fiction Las Vegas is explored as an only somewhat-extreme exampleof American expansion, cultural confrontation, and greed. Unlike mostrepresentations of Las Vegas, the city is not seen through the prism of thegambling industry, but through the eyes of new residents who have moved west insearch of a most restless variety of the American dream. Though the uniqueaesthetic of Las Vegas with its faux pyramids and Eiffel tower,multi-million-dollar palaces, and colorful entertainment industry provides abackdrop to these stories, the city’s true nature is revealed by real peoplewho live and work there, and is brush stroked neither for glamour nor kitsch.”
