欧洲可是母亲节的源头，最早的母亲节起源于古希腊。每年的一月十八日，古希腊公民会像众神之母瑞亚致敬，感谢她孕育众神，抚养众神，并赋予众神守护人类的责任和能力。这种向女神的致敬的活动一直持续到古罗马时期，并达到鼎盛。当时，庆祝活动甚至长达三天之久。
