2016.09.10 A Task 2 范文

Some people think studying from the past offers no benefits to today’s life, while others believe that history is a valuable source of information for us. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There are opposing discussions about the importance of past events and its relevance to our present. Some think history plays a significant role in our lives, whilst others feel that they are not beneficial these days. I truly believe in the former opinion that the past is relevant to today.

On the one hand, there are those that feel history is a subject that is not applicable to everyday life because of some of the facts learnt are not useful. Even until today, history subjects taught at schools heavily focuses on the memorisation of dates, names and facts. For instance, history textbooks often highlight specific dates in the past and other factors that are not useful information in our daily lives or the future. Because of this, past events can be seen as irrelevant to today’s life.

On the other hand, historical events teaches us of the past in order to avoid the same mistakes and suffering again. World wars and genocides are reminders to maintain peace globallyFor instance, the Holocaust in Nazi Germany was a significant travesty that resulted in mass murders of millions of Jews and the displacement of many. Understanding and learning from this particular historical event, and many more from the past is therefore important for the current generation to learn from before to ensure it never happens again.

In my opinion, it would be ignorant to claim that the past brings no advantages to our lives today, as history helps us to develop better futures. Whilst memorising dates and facts may seem pointless, the lessons learnt from these events are important. For example, the Holocaust has taught us not to discriminate against people of other religions and cultures, and instead be tolerant of everyone. Hence, once again, valuable information can be learnt from before in maintaining peace and harmony around the world.

In conclusionfrom the points mentioned above, there are differing opinions about studying from the past. However, I sincerely believe that history is significant in preserving peace and beneficial to today’s life.

其实这道考题,与2006422日的雅思考题非常相似:

History is little or nothing to tell people. Others believe people must study history to understand the present. Please discuss.
