#US-General Election - Rules and Restrictions on Campaigns

Candidates in the United States typically need to hire a campaign staff, arrange for office space and travel; conduct research; issue position papers and advertise on radio, television, in publications and on the Internet.  All of these activities require fund-raising, which is regulated by federal and local laws.

For example, federal law dictates how candidates for the federal offices of president, senator and representative may raise funds, as well as from whom and in what amounts.

For example, a candidate for president must establish a campaign organization, called a political committee that must have a treasurer and must register with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), which supervises and enforces campaign finance laws and rules.

There are also non-governmental organizations, often called "watchdogs," that monitor fundraising and spending or fact-check claims made by the campaigns -- can you name any?
