A long distance flight consumes more fuel than a car running for several years. Some argue that it would be better to discourage people to have non-essential air travel than to limit the use of cars. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

There is no doubt that fuel consumed by plane flights exceed the use of a car for years. Although some have contended that air travel should be limited rather than to minimize car use as a result of this, I tend to agree that we should limit driving cars instead.

On the one hand, limiting air travel that is not necessary can certainly reduce the burning of fossil fuels significantly. It is palpable that planes, jets or smaller aircrafts travelling long distances would require more fuel than a car, and by minimizing this, it would help to combat environmental issues. For instance, well-known celebrities and business moguls around the world tend to travel via private jets to various locations which consume a large amount of fuel. Just by restricting the number of these flights alone is able to decrease the amount of pollution emitted by these aircrafts.

On the other hand, limiting the use of cars is also another method of decreasing large fuel consumption. Especially for developing countries that are highly sparse, using cars is much easier to travel by but are causing much burning of fossil fuels. For example, the growing numbers of cars in millions are causing more and more traffic in countries like India. Most importantly, the burning of fossil fuels has given rise to air borne pollution problems like haze and smog. Therefore, limiting cars is also an effective way to decrease the use of fuel.

I strongly believe that limiting the number of cars on the road is a much better solution to decreasing pollution than limiting non-essential flights. Although a long distance flight may cause more environmental damage than a running car for several years, the pollution caused by an exponential increase of cars exceeds this greatly. The total amount of pollution would still be greater than the comparably less numbers of non-essential flights for business or private use.

In conclusion, although there are advantages to limiting non-essential flights and minimizing the use of cars, the combined total of cars in the world causes more pollution than the smaller number of air travel for business and other purposes. Hence, limiting cars on the road is a better way to tackle environmental issues.
