每年五月中旬,世界范围内都会举行活动声援国际不再恐同日(International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia andBiphobia,简称IDAHOT),讨论LBGTIQ群体在当今社会所面临的问题。就这个话题,上海美国中心请到了来自Les QueersGabby GabrielHaena KimLauren Fitzpatrick,来和大家聊一聊“酷儿经济”,也即酷儿群体的购买力是如何影响了商业机构对待LGBTIQ群体的方式。(Les Queers来自上海,旨在为上海的女性酷儿群体提供一个安全、有趣的交流社区。)

The middle of May is when the international community celebrates theInternational Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, highlighting issuesfacing the LBGTIQ community.  This May, the Shanghai American Center isproud to host a panel discussion of the queer economy by Gabby Gabriel, HaenaKim, and Lauren Fitzpatrick from Les Queers, a local group that provides asafe, fun environment for queer women in the city of Shanghai.  This talkwill focus on the new so-called
queer economy, and how their purchasing power is changing the way thebusiness community acts on LGBTIQ issues.

嘉宾介绍 Our Panelists 

来自美国的Gabby Gabriel是艺术家、作家、教育者、人道主义者和创业者,生活在上海并热爱这个城市。2014年,Gabby创建了Les Queers,旨在为女同及性别跨越者打造一个活跃和包容的社区,提高公众对于LGBTIQ群体的认知和包容,为其举办各种线上或线下、私人或公开的分享交流活动提供一个安全的空间。

Gabby Gabriel is an American artist, writer, educator, humanitarian andentrepreneur living and loving Shanghai. In 2014, Gabby founded Les Queers. LesQueers is committed to convening queer women (and gender queer people) in avibrant and inclusive community. They work together to promote the visibilityand inclusion of the LGBTIQ community, while providing for a safe space toshare, communicate, and participate in private and public, virtual and physicalgatherings.
 

Lauren Lomas Fitzpatrick
来自伦敦,是全球LGBTQI+社群的一员,在进才高级中学国际部担任图书馆员,教授经济学,她目前正在研究的课题是如何通过改变公司管理方式来更好地接纳少数社群——尤其是LGBTQI+社群。

Lauren Lomas Fitzpatrick is a London native, proud member of the global LGBTQI+community, teacher of economics and librarian at Jin Cai High SchoolInternational Division. She is currently researching how different approachesto managing a business can further embrace the acceptance of minoritycommunities - in particular, the LGBTQI+ community.
 

Haena Kim
The Dragon Trip上海办公室的经理。她是LGBTQA群体的一员,希望为大家提供高质量、不存在歧视的旅行体验。

Haena Kim is the co-manager of the Shanghai Dragon Trip Office, where sheoversees the learning adventures department.  She is a proud member of theLGBTQA family and is dedicated to making travel enlightening, anddiscrimination free.

根据美国社区大学协会(American Association of Community Colleges, AACC)的数据,2013年,约有740万学生进入美国社区大学学习。美国社区大学提供两年制的副学士学位(Associate Degree),学生可选择的课程非常广泛。在得到副学士学位证书后,很多学生会选择转入四年制的大学进行学习。也因此,有越来越多的国际学生将社区大学作为海外留学的选择。就社区大学转入四年制大学这个话题,EducationUSA Shanghai请到了美国加州喜瑞都大学的Kenny Lou教授和大家分享如何选择合适的社区大学、申请流程、如何转学等话题。

According to the American Association of Community Colleges, about 7.4 millionstudents were enrolled in community college in 2013. Studying at a communitycollege, which grants Associate
s Degrees aftertwo years, can give students the opportunity to learn about a wide array ofsubjects. After earning their Associates degree, many students even go on to transfer to top 4-yearuniversities. Increasingly, international students are also looking at communitycolleges as an option for their study abroad experience. To help explain moreabout transferring, EducationUSA Shanghai is pleased to host Professor KennyLou from Cerritos College for a discussion about California community colleges,transfers and admissions.

根据去年发布的关于在美留学国际学生的年度“门户开放报告”(Open Doors report),在美的中国留学生人数已超过32万。除了本科教育之外,国际学生也可多关注美国的研究生项目,比如法学博士(J.D.)。为了让大家更好的了解美国的法学院,上海美国中心请到了印第安纳大学麦肯尼法学院的研究生项目主任Miki Hamstra和中国合作项目专员HeatherGrimstad来为大家介绍申请美国法学院的过程和注意要点、如何在不同的法学院项目中作选择、以及在法学院学习的真实体验等等。

According to last year
s Open Doors report, there are over320,000 Chinese students in the U.S.  While many are studying at theundergraduate level, there are also lots of opportunities for internationalstudents to earn advanced degrees, including a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in Americanlaw. To talk about how you can earn a law degree in the U.S., the ShanghaiAmerican Center is proud to host Miki Hamstra, Director of Graduate Programsand Heather Grimstad, Coordinator of China Collaboration Programs from theIndiana University of Robert H. McKinney School of Law for an informationsession about the application process to U.S. Law Schools. Hamstra and Grimstadwill share insights into researching different law school programs,applications, as well as law school life and experiences.
