日程 Schedule (subject to change)

9:00-9:15: Opening Remarks

9:15-10:30: Session 1— Less is More: Using “Blackout Poetry” with English Language Learners

Rebekah Gordon

In the past few years, the concept of “blackout poetry” has been popularized by Austin Kleon. In short, “blackout poetry” is creating poetry from already-written text, such as newspapers, dictionaries, novels, magazines, or advertisements by crossing out, or “blacking out” the unnecessary words and letters. The process of creating “blackout poetry” forces students to work backward which exposes them to grammatically correct input which they must digest in a creative manner to create their own poem. Workshop participants will see several examples of “blackout poetry” and get a chance to try it out themselves. Finally, ways of integrating “blackout poetry” in the ESL/EFL classroom will be discussed.

10:45-12:00: Session 2— Teaching Students to Speak Naturally

Dan Forman

An approach to teaching sentence-level pronunciation to any level. This workshop focuses on how to teach basic pronunciation techniques to students at the sentence level with the goal of fluent, natural sounding speech.  The workshop starts with thought groups and how to teach them, and uses thought groups as a basis to teach prominence, linking, and word stress.  These four techniques will help students be more understood and help them to speak fluently and naturally.

12:00-13:30: Lunch Break (On your own)

13:30-14:45: Session 3— Scaffolding: Providing Instructional Support to Enhance Learning

Rachel Parker

This workshop will introduce and demonstrate instructional, procedural, and verbal scaffolding. Students have different learning styles and it is crucial to provide instructional support (scaffolding) to address the varying learning needs of our students to enhance learning and aid in the mastery of tasks. Teachers will be able to differentiate the support that they deliver in their classrooms based on students’ needs. Participants will brainstorm how they can implement scaffolding in their classrooms.

15:00-16:15:  Session 4— Formative Assessment for Learning

Dan Forman

Formative Assessment can help teachers learn what their students are learning (or not learning) during the lessons, units, and terms so that teachers are more informed decision makers in the language classroom.  The workshop includes explanations of 15 fun and engaging formative assessments to help get your students talking and interacting with the material.

16:15-16:30:  Closing Remarks
