Simon

Some people say that what children watch on TV influences their behavior while others say the amount of time they spend watching TV influences their behavior. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

As watching TV has become a popular pastime for children in many countries, people are concerned about its influence on children's behaviour. Which matters more, what they watch or how much time they spend on watching, is open to debate.

Some people argue that TV content has a greater impact on how children behave. Presenting alternatives to the world around them, TV programmes are an important sauce of knowledge for children. Without value systems as sophisticated as adults, children tend to view what they observe on TV as social norms and imitate them. For example, those who watch violent acts on TV are more likely to become aggressive for fear of a scary world. The reverse can also be true: programmes with prosocial messages can have a positive effect on them. Therefore, it seems harmless if children are only presented with positive role models.

At the same time, some people believe that there is a stronger link between the hours spent on watching TV and children's behaviour. Children who immerse themselves in a violent world for a long time, they argue, are more likely to become immune to the horror of violence. However, moderate exposure to TV shows hardly changes how they view the society thanks to their engagement in other spare-time activities, such as sports and parties. In addition, regardless of what content children absorb, long hours of watching TV can make them less sociable for a lack of real interaction with family and friends.

In my opinion, TV content and screen time are equally significant factors in changing children’s behaviour. While violent content can negatively affect their actions, watching TV without time restriction is damaging to their development anyway.
