Los Angeles has a definite stereotype: sunny sandy shores, glitzy glamorous celebrities and maybe a bit of vapidness and superficiality. But even in a city that embraces those well-worn tropes for tourists, there are still some hidden gems across area that can be uncovered and enjoyed.

1. NUART THEATRE

L.A. is the land of movie stars, and Hollywood ,and small independent movie theaters to show them off. The Nuart Theater is one of my personal favorites: a classic one-screen theater with a large beautiful marquis to display the latest release, indie flick or foreign film. The Nuart also frequently hosts Q&A’s and panel events that go along with movies, and bring together entertainment personalities and famous filmmakers.

2. THE LAST BOOKSTORE“最后”书店

In the heart of downtown you’ll find The Last Bookstore, which might very well be the last one that you’ll ever need. Inside the massive space are thousands upon thousands of books and incredible displays that take advantage of the cavernous multi-story store. The bookstore, which hosts readings, signings and cultural events, also has galleries displaying local artists’ work.

3. THE GROVE

A great place for both eating and shopping, The Grove hosts expensive brands and affordable labels alike, along with a bunch of other different amenities in this outdoor mall. What’s even better is that it iss next door to the original Los Angeles farmer’s market, which has moved from its original humble beginnings to become a foodie paradise.

4. LUCKY STRIKE

Down for some bowling? Lucky Strike has got you covered. Located in L.A. Live, a revitalized neon lighted area of Los Angeles, it’s right next to some really great bars, restaurants and nightlife – as well as some world-famous sports facilities like Staples Center (home to both the Lakers and the Clippers).

5. THE WILDE THISTLE

A bit more of an eclectic experience, The Wilde Thistle is in Culver City on the Westside of Los Angeles. A lively Celtic cafe that figures to host the bohemian local art community and artwork, you’ll always see interesting people, listen to intriguing discussions, and maybe even catch a live performance or two.

The Wilde Thistle
