GRADUATE FASHION WEEK CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS

Central Saint Martins showcased their BA fashion show in their impressive campus in Kings Cross. With a grand total of 40 designers all presenting their collections it really was an epic and diverse evening. Each designer was given a proper ‘moment’ on the runway, with their own sound track, model choices (including interesting street casting) even a few grandads made an appearance in Angus Lai and Swarovski scholarship graduate Martin Hanly shows.

Texture and scale were the two key points of the show. Han Kim literally filled the runway with giant glitter stars, oversized collars, floor length knitted sleeves, while Gabriele Skucas knitted oversized bunny backpacks, and sent multiple models down the runway on black tightly knitted swings!

There was a noticeable undercurrent of dishevelment, and nods towards the end of the world, as many designers tapped into the ‘undone’. Qiying Fang sent out an army of warrior boys, layers and tears galore, determined and fearless to the sound of cold, blustering wind. Nathan Moy sent us overboard into the freezing waters with his extravagant pipe-smoking fisherman inspired collection made up heavily of plastics, reminding us perhaps of the pollution to our planet.

Print was exceptionally strong and not shy of colour – quite the opposite which is always welcome. Milligan Beaumont’s oversized oriental inspired collection zoomed down the catwalk on skateboards which made everyone smile, a response from the audience which remained for Wataru Tominaga and Angus Lai with their bold popping menswear collections.

Footwear was a talking point, ranging from a thin heel to a giant wedge, via knitted oversize clogs, shredded fabric stuck to shoes dragging as models walked and giant, prosethic feet to no footwear at all.

The impressive showcase continued upon leaving as the audience was struck by long lines of collections that didn’t make it into the main show, bordering the fountains of the stunning square outside the iconic fashion school.
