DESCRIPTION
Psychological ‘splitting’ renders the world a chaotic, unstable and at times threatening place. We bury in the subconscious those aspects of our nature that we would rather be oblivious of, or project them on to things outside of ourselves, denying our complete nature of being.
My work is grounded in exploring the body as the site of dread and fascination. A place in which binary opposites collide, which collapses the distance between things, revealing truths. The work aims to re-contextualise the grotesque and probes at ambivalent responses the body can evoke when it breaches imposed boundaries.
By merging disparate elements, and referencing imagery that is ordinarily concealed, I render reality not as ontological and rational, but, like the body, something that is in a constant state of transformation.
With flesh always a unifying ground, the work renders the immateriality of thoughts and feelings, destabilises the boundary between subject and object, and unifies what is seen and what is felt.
