Another year, another exciting university acceptance season in the UnitedStates! While some of you who applied to schools in the U.S. already havereceived offers, others are still waiting. To better prepare you for the nextsteps of the study abroad process, the Shanghai American Center will hostShanghai’s EducationUSA Adviser and Consular Officers for a talk on applyingfor student visas, the visa interview process, and campus life in the States. 5月18日晚6点半，上海美国中心请到Dani Francuz Rose 和 Shushan Richardson 来为大家介绍美国的春季节日。Dani Francuz Rose 和 Shushan Richardson 是经验丰富的美国英语教师，目前正通过美国国务院英语语言学者项目在多个中国大学巡回授课。一个国家的传统节日往往是了解其历史、文化和价值观的绝佳切入点，两位嘉宾会介绍土拨鼠日、圣帕特里克节、复活节、愚人节、地球日、母亲节、父亲节、阵亡将士纪念日等节日以及背后的故事。到场的观众还有机会亲手制作一些小的节日纪念品！

On May 18,2018, the Shanghai American Center will host Dani Francuz Rose and ShushanRichardson for a talk on the holidays that are celebrated in the United Statesduring the springtime. During this current academic year, Ms. Rose and Ms.Richardson, both of whom are highly qualified and experienced U.S. educators inthe field of teaching English, are hosted at Chinese universities through theDepartment of State’s English Language Fellows program. A country’s traditional holidays provide insightinto a country’s history, culture, and values. Ms. Rose and Ms. Richardson willdiscuss Groundhog Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, April Fool’s Day, Earth Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Memorial Day. Beyond talking about when these holidays arecelebrated, they will delve into how and why these days are celebrated.Everyone in attendance will have a chance to celebrate and experience theseholidays and will even make small “holiday” souvenir to take home!

Mid-term or“off-year” elections rarely approach the drama of presidential electionyears. However, this year’s election for the entire House ofRepresentatives and one-third of the U.S. Senate may be one of the most hotlycontested mid-terms in memory. Will the Democrats seize control of theHouse of Representatives and the Senate? Will the Republicans hold on tocongressional control? Dr. David Goldfield joins us at the ShanghaiAmerican Center to survey the possibilities for both scenarios, the result ofwhich may shape both domestic and foreign policy for years to come.

Dr. DavidR. Goldfield, Ph.D. is an American historian, writer, film director, andprofessor. Currently, he is the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History at theUniversity of North Carolina in Charlotte and his research interests mainlyfocus on the American South, Urban History, and the American Civil War.Goldfield has served as an expert witness in voting rights cases and consultedfor history museums. He also works as an Academic Specialist for the US StateDepartment, which means he leads workshops and seminars that focus on Americanpolitical culture and help to provide historical context for present-dayelections. He is the author or editor of sixteen books. Both of his books,Black, White, and Southern: Race Relations and Southern Culture and CottonFields and Skyscrapers, won the Mayflower Award for nonfiction and werenominated for the Pulitzer Prize. The former book was also awarded theOutstanding Book Award from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of HumanRights. His most recent book is The Gifted Generation: America in the Post WarEra (2017). Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, Goldfield grew up in Brooklyn,New York. He attended the University of Maryland, and earned his Ph.D. in 1970.
