While some believe art is an expressive gesture of the individual and is entitled to “art for art’s sake,” others believe art should have social relevancy. On May 31, the Shanghai American Center will welcome Art Historian Julie Chun to posit the question, “Can art make a difference in the community or the world? Can artists impact the way people think with their creations to heighten awareness about issues that directly or indirectly affect us all?” The first part of the lecture will be a thoughtful consideration of case studies of art that strives for social relevancy. The second part features American artist Maya Kramer, who will share her work, which highlights her concerns about the ecology, feminism and the sociological assumptions that enable widespread environmental degradation.
