Tuesday, October 25, 18:30  [Monthly Artist Talk] Her Story: FemaleAritists from Antiquity to Contemporary Times

The October Monthly Artist Talk series at theShanghai American Center will focus on the important role women artists havecontributed to the visual culture of art. While fewer in numbers, femaleartists have worked for or alongside their male counterparts to provide uniqueviewpoints. Recent scholarship, including feminist studies, has highlightedtheir achievements and art history is now striving to include more womenartists into the canon in efforts to break down gender biases.

The lecture will open with a historical overviewby art historian Julie Chun to explore how the male gaze established thedepiction of women. She will introduce some of the notable female artists inwestern art history who still remain obscure to Chinese audiences. This will befollowed by an insightful lecture by Shen Qilan, a well-respected art criticwho will share with us her analysis of works by modern and contemporary femaleartists, some which are on view in Shanghai at the "SHE" exhibitionat the West Bund Long Museum and the "Masterpieces from the CentrePompidou, 1906-1977" at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.

The final U.S. Presidential debate took place earlier this month and nowelection-watchers, political scientists and U.S. voters are all left wonderinghow the debates will actually influence the final election on November 8th. Toexamine what the effect the widely-covered debates between Republican Donald Trumpand Democrat Hillary Clinton may have on the overall result, the ShanghaiAmerican Center is proud to host a debate recap and discussion session led by aU.S. diplomat to try and answerthe question: “Do Presidential Debates Matter?”  To find out, we willdelve into the history of televised political debates, public polling,as well as ask the audience for your best guess into how the debates will (orwon’t) determine who will be America’s next president.
