The environmental problems in the world cannot be solved by ordinary people because what they can do is too little and it is the responsibility of politicians to protect the environment. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Environmental issues are multiplying at a rapid rate and some people opine that these cannot be resolved by the people at large as their measures are too little and protection of the environment is the responsibility of politicians. I disagree with this view to some extent as general public can make tremendous effects on the environment through collaborated effort.

On the one hand, politicians may be the ones who can make real impact for solving environmental issues. It might be true that, unlike political personnel, general public does not hold the power to introduce legislations and parliamentary bills. For instance, environmental conservation acts and anti-poaching regulations can only be introduced by members of parliament. Thus, by virtue of legal power that the politicians hold, it is their responsibility to protect the environment.

On the other hand, ordinary individuals hold the power of numbers with which even small efforts are multiplied and can help in alleviating environmental issues. In other words, when one person takes some action to improve the environment, other people follow in his steps and this results in joined action that can have great impact for environmental protection. For example, to combat growing deforestation in India, an individual stood hugging a tree in the forest and thousands of people followed this movement called the ‘Chipkoo movement’. This decade old movement is still one of the most successful environmental protection steps that was organized and led by the common folk and made an example for so many others to undertake forests’ preservation.

In conclusion, I somewhat disagree with the belief that environmental problems across the globe cannot be solved by ordinary people as the public holds the power of the masses wherein each combined action can become a great impact on the path to environmental conservation.
