日程 Schedule (subjectto change)

9:00-9:15: OpeningRemarks

9:15-10:30:Session 1—Fluency Tasks for the EFL Writing Classroom – Sarah Warfield

For manystudents, the hardest thing about writing in a second language is starting,or getting words on the page. Accuracy in writing is the goal for manyEFL writing classrooms, but helping students develop fluency is an essentialfirst step. Fluency tasks are also useful in encouraging recall strategies inlearners, which improves vocabulary acquisition. This interactive workshop isaimed at helping students increase their motivation and skill in L2 writing, inorder to develop the grammar and vocabulary needed to master writing inEnglish. The workshop will begin with a discussion of the importance of fluencyin second language acquisition. For the remainder of the time, participantswill practice L2 writing fluency tasks that will be immediately applicable totheir current teaching contexts.

10:45-12:00:Session 2—ReadingFluency – Heidi Healy

Reading speed and comprehension are not mutuallyexclusive.  Reading too fast lowers comprehension of a passage, butreading too slow also impedes comprehension.  While various readingexperts suggest different ideal speeds for reading, they agree that reading speedis important to reading comprehension. In this workshop, teachers willparticipate in several short activities that can help students increase theirreading speed which will allow students to read more and understand what theyread better. In just a few minutes a day teachers can help their studentsdevelop automaticity in word recognition and develop their ability to readfaster.

12:00-13:30Lunch Break

13:30-14:45Session 3— Corrective Feedback in the EFL Writing Classroom – Sarah Warfield

How and how much feedback to give tostudents in the EFL Writing Classroom are questions that effective teachersconsider. Research suggests that learners do not improve productive skillsbased on the amount of feedback they receive. However, providing feedback onwriting errors, particularly at the global level, can help students notice notonly their grammar mistakes, but the grammar of English overall. Thisinteractive workshop will discuss how to provide useful and accurate grammarfeedback to students. Participants will discuss methods for marking local andglobal grammar errors that are effective for the student and efficient for theinstructor. They will also engage in activities aimed at promoting autonomouslearning in students, to motivate them to “take charge” of their own grammarinstruction. Finally, participants will discuss how to use peer review andassessment practices to encourage accurate grammar production.

15:00-16:15Session 4—LayeredReading – Heidi Healy

Reading is a complexprocess that can be overwhelming for many students. However, reading is a vitalskill because it is a primary source of learning. First, we learn to read andthen we read to learn.  Layered reading is the process of reading a textmultiple times in multiple ways in order to gain the most information from it.By carefully planning reading activities using before, during and after tasksand helping students utilize reading strategies, teachers can help students beable to read more and understand more while they read. In this workshop, teachers will participate in a variety of activities that can be done atdifferent stages of the reading process. In addition, they will learn an easyframework to help them plan their own layered reading lessons.

16:15-16:30: Closing Remarks
