In his poetry volume Leaves of Grass (1855), Whitman delighted in the beauty in everything: democracy, nature, love, life, and even death. Although beloved today, Leaves of Grass initially unnerved American readers, who struggled with its celebration of human intimacy, and perceived homoerotic undertones. Whitman was even fired from his job as a United States government bureaucrat upon its publication. During the Civil War, Whitman volunteered with injured soldiers, and his “Captain O My Captain” the sorrowful elegy penned to Abraham Lincoln upon the President’s assassination, remains a legendary work.
