专业及学院概况

哥大的社会工作专业开设在专门的社会工作学院下（School of Social Work），简称CSSW。作为一个以解决社会问题，改善人的生活为目标的专业，社会工作十分看重申请者的责任心、使命感和一种崇高的服务情怀。正如同学院首页院名下面的小字所说的那样，社会工作者所做的事情是“make waves, move mountains, change lives”，看上去十分具有排山倒海的豪气。而CSSW说自己的使命是这样的：

1.the development of leaders in social work practice and research;

2.the advancement of the social work profession, professional values, knowledge, and skills; and

3.the enhancement of well-being and the promotion of human rights and social justice at the local, national, and global level through the creation of responsive social programs and policies.

从这里我们不难看出社会对于社会工作者的诉求是什么，同时也能看出学生从CSSW毕业之后的去向如何。也就是说，社会工作者从事的是提高人类福祉，促进人权和社会公平的事业，除了去NGO以及其他的一些协会工作以外，还可以致力于社会政策方面的研究。

由于是一个独立的学院，所以招收的学生人数是较多的。按照学校给出的说法，每学期学校大概有800个在校学生，超过40个全职教师，这个规模算是相当大的。

课程

CSSW提供M.S.和PhD两种学位项目，招收秋季和春季学生，其中M.S.项目开设有网络项目。M.S.时间为两年，四学期，需要60学分以及1200小时的field instruction hour。如果本科是社会工作专业的话，可以参加一个Advanced Standing Program将拿到硕士学位的时间缩短到十个月。

进入CSSW以后，第一年学习一些基础的社会工作课程，涉及到社会福利政策和研究人类行为学等内容，以及一些实践项目。第一年结束以后需要在以下四个方法中选择一个：

Advanced Clinical Social Work Practice
Advanced Generalist Practice and Programming
Policy Practice
Social Enterprise Administration

同时将选择的这样方法method应用到以下七个中任意一个领域的研究中去：

Aging
Contemporary Social Issues
Family, Youth, and Children’s Services
International Social Welfare and Services to Immigrants and Refugees
Health, Mental Health, and Disabilities
School-Based and School-Linked Services
World of Work

在拿到学院的录取之后，申请者需要提交一个表格给学院，包括自己选择领域的意向，当然这个意向需要与申请者在简历中提到的自己的实践经历相关，在进入学院学习之后学院会把学生分配给校外的机构，实践一般是在纽约附近的州进行的，比如新泽西，康涅狄格州。

实践项目要求每周有三天左右是待在机构、学校等实践场所，每周只有几个小时的时间是在课堂学习。由于哥大的社会工作专业申请起来是相对容易，所以许多中国学生将进入藤校的梦想压在CSSW上，不过对于想要体验学生生活，体验纽约校园的申请者，社会工作可能不是一个完美的选择。

就业：

学院给出的学生就业情况

Graduates work in diverse fields in the nonprofit, government and corporate sectors. Many of them provide individual and family therapy/counseling. Employers actively recruit CSSW graduates because of their solid academic preparation, analytical and professional practice strengths, and their leadership.

解读：CSSW毕业的学生就业前景还是比较好的，多数在各领域的非盈利组织、政府组织还有企业工作，大多数毕业生从事个人或者家庭的咨询服务。

对于我们中国学生，回国就业是不错的选择。因为国内的社会工作事业正在发展当中。

申请要求

对于M.S.项目，学院对申请者的要求如下：

•A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

•60 credits in the liberal arts, of which at least nine must be in the social sciences.

•An academic record reflecting the ability to do graduate work at least at a B level.

•A serious commitment to the profession of social work and the capacity for professional self-awareness, often demonstrated by internships and life experiences.

值得注意的是第二点，学院希望未来的学生是文科生，而且至少修过九学分的社会科学相关的课程，所以不建议本科没有修过文科课程的纯理科生去申请，尽管鲜有纯理科生选择申请这个专业。

第三点所说的希望学生能够用学术记录证明自己能够在研究生项目中达到B level以上的水平，这个学术证明不仅仅是指本科GPA，由于社会工作这个专业实践的内容比较多，所以要想在研究生阶段拿到不错的成绩不仅仅需要不错的学术水平，还需要一定的实践能力，那么这个时候学校在浏览申请材料的时候很有可能会关注大学期间的实习这一项的成绩。

另外，申请有面试要求。

我们再来看一看CSSW目前的学生构成

The student body consists of individuals who have evidenced professional promise and have strong academic credentials. There are about 800 students in residence during any given term, ranging in age from their early 20s to early 60s (the average age is mid-20s). About 85 percent of our student body is female; about 12–15 percent come from 30 nations besides the U.S. and speak 25 languages. Approximately a quarter of the student community is made up of students of color (e.g., African American, Asian American, Hispanic, biracial). Most students belong to at least one of over twenty caucuses and/or groups representing a range of social issues.

解读：每学期800名学生左右，年龄跨度从二十岁到六十多岁，平均年龄在二十五六。比较独特的一点是大概百分之八十五的学生是女性，这也是很多文科专业的普遍情况。国际学生的比例大概在12%-15%，但是四分之一的学生是有色人种。

学费

学费情况如下

The estimated tuition for the 2015–2016 academic year totals $41,764 ($20,882 per semester, for which a student is eligible to enroll for 10.5 to 19.5 credit hours). The estimated fees for 2015–2016 are approximately $5,800.

由于是在纽约，生活费用会比较高。
