Shameera Wiest: To the edge of visibility

In her most recent body of work,Shameera Wiest creates serene, minimalist images in oil and watercolor, as wellas photography, of muted colors with a silver line or cube intended to explorethe subconscious experience through the invocation of spatial immensity and allthat blocks this experience. Wiest believes in the profound experience of theviewer in her sparse, evocative works that create an atmosphere with color andspace representative of her commentary on climate change. Adding the element ofsilver spray, her paintings take on a dimension to investigate more fully theimmersive effects of light.  Developingthemes of sublime, transparency and transmutation, her atmosphericpaintings are created from subconscious longings for a place of harmony, spiritualawakening and enlightenment. With her academic training and prior workexperience in science, Wiest works with principles of the scientific method increating her work. She collects, documents, interprets and analyzes data beforeembarking on the journey of laying paint on canvas. She adds in a metalliccompound to explore scientific principles of metal and chemical assault on theatmosphere and in turn on nature and humankind. Her imagery of subconsciousexperience is transmuted from experiences of Swiss alpine spaces to grey Beijingskies polluted with indescribable compounds that likely include metal.
