#AmericanMusic – Big Band/Swing Era – In the 1920’s through the late 1940’s, American popular music was dominated by big bands – groups consisting of 10-25 musicians playing saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section.  

These jazz bands, jazz orchestras or dance bands as they were called played a style of jazz music that was arranged in advance and noted on sheet music, as opposed to improvised by the individual artists.  

The genre was initially characterized by a sweet and romantic melody and evolved to include the swing style and more improvisation. American artists such as Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller all played a role in shaping this music.  During World War II, Big Bands played an important role in raising troop morale.
