On April 12, 2018, the Shanghai American Center will host Dr. Janetta ReboldBenton for a talk titled Winslow Homer (1836-1920) and 19th-Century Realism. Lifein America is visually documented in painting of the Civil War and the daily activitiesof ordinary people. Homers profound love of nature is seen in his factual scenes ofboating and fascination with various weather conditions. His contemporary andfellow Realist, Thomas Eakins (1844-1916), focused instead on depictions ofhuman anatomy, especially when engaged in sports. Dr. Benton, DistinguishedProfessor of Art History at Pace University in New York, is in China forseveral weeks as a 2018 Fulbright Lecturer at China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
